Here’s the original post…
Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday… by now you’re likely familiar with these trending—and trendy—designated holiday shopping days. Lesser known, is Giving Tuesday, a philanthropic spin on conspicuous consumption. The initiative is picking up steam as we close in on this year’s day of giving, Tuesday, December 3. I enjoyed reading, earlier today, that Bill Gates posted about this on his LinkedIn page; big names behind causes typically result in people paying attention. Which, they seem to be doing.
Type #GivingTuesday into your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr search bars and you’ll be rewarded with all kinds of details, including what others are doing to show their support.
Along with embracing what Giving Tuesday inspires, I enjoy being introduced to unfamiliar causes—their targeted demographic, how and what they contribute, where their funding comes from, and how they creatively go about doing all of the above—and forming unexpected local, national and global relationships in the process. Thanks to attending Social Good Summit 2013 and creating a profile on Plus Social Good, these relationships, and my data base of nonprofits around the world, have grown exponentially.
One of my #GivingTuesday actions comes to you via Pinterest where I have highlighted several organizations with whom I have a relationship with either as a journalist, blogger or volunteer, or that seem to be underexposed. The intent is to turn others onto nonprofits that I have experience with and feel good about recommending as recipients for your hard-earned dollars. I’ll be adding to the board regularly, so feel free to shout-out about your favorite organizations here.
I am excited to read up on, and “pin”, additional charities, including those spotlighted on Giving Tuesday’s website: LitWorld, The Walkabout Foundation, The Red Hook Initiative and Fresh Artists to name a few; plus partnering organizations such as NCAA Basketball (#GiveanAssist) and The Pretty Smart Company.
In taking the time to read this post (and visiting at least a couple of the links shared here), I hope that you, too, will be inspired to educate yourself on where to give, and better yet, TO give.
